East Cambridge apartments from affordable to luxury Once an almost exclusively working class neighborhood with a large immigrant population, East Cambridge is today a dynamic and diverse neighborhood known for its thriving business and commercial centers. Bordered by Somerville, the Charles River, and Boston, East Boston apartments are the perfect choice for those looking for easy proximity to shopping, transportation, and recreation. Since the early 1980s, East Cambridge has been transformed from industrial area to commercial and residential area. Much of East Cambridge’s real estate has been renovated, rehabbed, and revitalized, meaning apartment seekers have their choice of new apartments, luxury lofts, and of course, the quaint 19th century worker’s cottages that line the quiet side streets. Some of the most exciting new East Cambridge apartments for rent are in the rehabbed commercial buildings that line Binney Street and the surrounding streets. These luxury lofts offer plenty of open space and sun. Many of East Boston’s luxury apartments are located in the Charles River waterfront, a redeveloped area that also contains hotels, high-tech businesses, a regional shopping mall, and the Boston Museum of Science. East Cambridge has traditionally been a Portuguese neighborhood, and there is still a heavy influence from that group that can be found today. Portuguese restaurants and bakeries line Cambridge Street from Inman Square to Lechmere, the area’s main commercial center. Despite its newfound good looks, newcomers and long time residents are still amused by the “Live Chickens Fresh Killed” sign, a remnant of the neighborhood’s gritty past. With so much change still underway, now is perhaps one of the most exciting times to find an apartment in East Cambridge! | Pictures
